Solar System - 01

OPENING QUESTION:..Imagine you are creating a unit of measure using some sort of distance in our solar system, what distance would you use, and why would you choose that?

OBJECTIVE:  I will be able to sketch the solar system and all the major bodies in it after today's class.

WORD FOR TODAY:

  • Sol ("Our Sun")
  • Asteroid ("Rocks in space" otherwise known as "Flying Potatoes" )
  • Comet ("A dirty snowball")
  • Meteor ("Rocks falling to Earth")
  • Moon ("A rocky body orbiting a planet")
  • Planet ("A spherical body orbiting a star")
    • Mercury
    • Venus
    • Earth
    • Mars
    • Jupiter *(has rings!)
    • Saturn *(has rings!)
    • Uranus *(has rings!)
    • Neptune *(has rings!)
  • Dwarf Planet:
    • Pluto
    • Eris
    • Haumea
  • Astronomical Unit (1 AU = 150,000,000 km = ~ 100,000,000 miles)

WORK O' THE DAY

Please open up your folders and grab JUST the planets of the solar system. Let's have the folks designated by the color 'blue' to lead the conversation to:

  1. Name each of the planets
  2. Place them on your table in order from closest to the sun
  3. Find any moons in your tiles and place them in a separate pile.

═════════════════════════

1 person from each group, please the VERY large roll of butcher paper and carve out about 4' x 4' or so and take it back to your group.

Each person will contribute to the following task. Make sure to use a colored pencil from the plastic tub that matches the color dot on your desk (Blue. Green. Red. or Orange). If there isn't your color pencil in the tub, go back to the back counter (By Mr Spock!) and grab one.

Now please sketch a map of our solar system be sure to include all of the appropriate items from our "Words o' The Day" (Omit Dwarf Planets for now, I'll explain why later). Do NOT use your chromies (yet).

Yes, you will probably get some items wrong but that's perfectly fine

I'll give you copies of the following picture(s) please cut and paste the planets into your sketch/planetary map:

═════════════════════════

When you are done, please open your chromies and find the diameter of each of those objects and label it right there on the sheet.

═════════════════════════

If time permits, please use the following chart to create a NEW chart of the planets on the back of your existing chart.

This one has to be done to SCALE.

Please have a conversation with your team and make sure everyone knows what that means.

This can be pretty tough, so PLAN AHEAD!!!!
